An Attitude of Gratitude
I enjoyed reading to Thomas S. Monson’s talk An Attitude
of Gratitude this week. I appreciated the stories he shared of those he was
grateful for. I loved his tribute to his teacher Lucy Gertsch. It was touching
to read about how much this lovely lady influenced President Monson in his
youth. I loved learning about those who President Monson was truly grateful for.
In reading who President Monson had encouraged us to be thankful for, I want to
put that challenge to me and write down those I am grateful for.
I, of course, I am grateful for my mother, in all the work she
did to take care of me and help me become a responsible adult. I’m sure she had
difficult days with young children. My sister and I are only 15 months apart,
and I know that had to be difficult, but she did it and she raised 7 children.
I am so thankful for the way she tried hard to teach us the gospel, to having
family home evenings and challenging us to memorize the Articles of Faith. We
had a lovely home life and I appreciate her and all she did for our family.
My dad was a hard worker. He taught us how to make our way in
the world. He was a business owner and my brothers worked for him in his glass
business. I helped answer the phones when my mom wasn’t able to and learned to
work that way. I appreciate my dad in providing for our family. I’m sure it
wasn’t easy, he had to go out and find the work, but he did it and provided just
fine for our family of 9 people.
I’ve had many teachers in my years as a student and the one
teacher that stands out in my mind is my history teacher in my 11th
grade year. He made the subject so interesting and provided projects to help us
learn. We did art and played games to help us remember what we were learning.
He just had a way about him. I think it was because he was excited about
history and that was passed onto his students. One of the assignments we had was
to give a presentation about a person from history in first person, we also had
to dress up as the person. I was so scared, but I admired my teacher so much
that I worked hard on giving a good presentation. I was Charles Lindberg and I
was so happy that I got an A on that assignment.
I am thankful for my husband who supports me in my schooling
and also makes life fun. I tend to me more serious sometimes and he is always
making my life light and happy when he is around. I love him so much for providing
for our family and for being such a good dad to our daughters.
Lastly, I am thankful for Christ and all he has done to make
eternal life possible for me. He has also helped me so much to get through this
semester of school. It was difficult for me and He helped strengthen me and
helped me to see that I could do it.
I appreciate the lesson I learned this week about how
gratitude is a noble virtue and I hope I can also have the spirit of gratitude
with me.
