The Last Post

I made it! Yay! I am really glad that I was able to do all the hard things the course had in store for me. This was a difficult semester with this and my other classes, but look at how I was able to complete it! The things I learned from this course helped me to realize that I can do difficult things if I take it one step at a time. Remember we don’t have to do it all at once, one baby step at a time will get us to our destination. Looking back in my notes, I noticed that this class had 4 goals, one of which was to choose good habits. I think that is the thing that resonated most with me with this entire course, is working on choosing and implementing good habits that I can apply throughout my life. The book Launching Leaders had a lot of advice on good habits that will help a person achieve their goals. What I loved about these habits is that they aren’t hard, they are simple in nature, one is getting up early. However, these habits will give great returns on the investment of work...

An Attitude of Gratitude

I enjoyed reading to Thomas S. Monson’s talk An Attitude of Gratitude this week. I appreciated the stories he shared of those he was grateful for. I loved his tribute to his teacher Lucy Gertsch. It was touching to read about how much this lovely lady influenced President Monson in his youth. I loved learning about those who President Monson was truly grateful for. In reading who President Monson had encouraged us to be thankful for, I want to put that challenge to me and write down those I am grateful for. I, of course, I am grateful for my mother, in all the work she did to take care of me and help me become a responsible adult. I’m sure she had difficult days with young children. My sister and I are only 15 months apart, and I know that had to be difficult, but she did it and she raised 7 children. I am so thankful for the way she tried hard to teach us the gospel, to having family home evenings and challenging us to memorize the Articles of Faith. We had a lovely home life a...

What's a Business For?

This week I read an article called What’s a Business For? by Charles Handy. I was asked to answer a few questions about the article. Based on what you read in the first two pages (pages 3 and 4), why are virtue and integrity so vital to an economy? I think virtue and integrity are so important because so people will want to participate in it. The article states that if those in business are not trustworthy then the game becomes unreliable and no one will want to play. The article also said that another downfall is that the way society creates wealth will be eroded and we will need to rely on governments to do it, and they are not good at it. So, telling the truth and being honest is vital to an economy. According to Charles Handy, what is the “real justification” for the existence of businesses? Handy said that the real justification for the existence of businesses is the “something” that they can do more of or better beyond just making a profit. He said that the prof...
