Achieving Dreams
I enjoyed learning about Randy
Pausch achieving his childhood dreams this week. Some of his dreams didn’t turn
out the way he planned, but that is what course correction is for. I think that
he was able to find success in many of his childhood dreams because first of
all, he wrote them down. He didn’t mention his specifically, but I’m not sure
how he could have remembered what he wanted to do if he had not written it
down. There is power in setting goals to
paper and there are studies that state that a person is more likely to achieve
their goals by writing them down. Randy
then started working on his dreams and just found ways to make it work, even if
it wasn’t perfect, he was happy with his results.
I feel
that dreaming is essential because it gives us something to reach for. Reflecting
on the inventions and innovations of the last 10 years, I think that it was
someone’s dream to make or do those things. Where would the world be if
dreaming wasn’t happening all the time? Now, some dreams don’t become a reality
and that is okay because we can change our dreams and try again.
One childhood dream has already come true for me, and that was simply to get married
and have children. This dream, of course, relied on meeting someone who would
want to marry me and I feel fortunate that I was able to realize this aspiration when I couldn't achieve it on my own.
I’ve been married for 21 years and have 2 children. Another dream I had, and
still do, is to own a BMW. I really don’t know how this became important to me,
but there was a BMW dealership down the street from where my dad worked, and I
passed by it often. I thought that fancy people drove BMW’s and I wanted to be
fancy. I would doodle the logo on my papers in class at school and dream about
the day I could drive one. It might be a while, but I believe that one day I
will have a BMW of my very own. My husband and I are working on another dream
right now, but I think after the business becomes successful, there will be
money enough for me to get my fancy car. I can't wait!
