Overcoming Challenges


In the readings this week I was genuinely inspired by the talk and video from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. His words of encouragement helped me to see that I can really do the thing I’m setting out to do. First of all, I was reassured that I can make it through my schooling. Elder Holland helped me to understand that even though it might take a few years, that I can do it and if I “stay at my post and keep trying” I will be successful. The lesson Elder Holland taught on perseverance about how the early Saints built the Salt Lake Temple, many of who would never enjoy the building in this life taught me how important my example is to my children and their children. They will be able to see how I kept going in spite of challenges and hopefully they can be inspired by me to keep going. My family has been inspired by some of our own ancestors’ examples of perseverance. Once my daughter was banged up in a minor car accident and was scheduled to work the next day. We gave her the choice of whether or not to go in to work that day if she wasn’t feeling well. She related a story about one of our ancestors who was buried in the snow after an avalanche for over 2 hours one day, his mother bringing him back to life after he was dug out, and the next day he went to work on the farm. She said if he can do that, I can go to work today. It’s good for us to know examples of perseverance, it can really motivate us in our own lives.
I appreciated Elder Hollands words of encouragement from his video “Good things to come.” I liked the example he shared from his own life of the struggles he faced and the encouraging words he shared “trust God and believe in good things to come.” This helped me to see that it won’t always be like this and that with hard work I can come out on the other side with a degree! Yay!
            Another thing I learned this week from the readings and videos were from Taylor Richards, on the importance of involving the Lord in our pursuits. I liked how he encouraged his listeners that we can do amazing things with the Lord at our side. I trust in this with my whole heart, I know that I can do all things through Christ (Philippians 4:13.)

I enjoyed learning about Randy Pausch achieving his childhood dreams this week. Some of his dreams didn’t turn out the way he planned, but that is what course correction is for. I think that he was able to find success in many of his childhood dreams because first of all, he wrote them down. He didn’t mention his specifically, but I’m not sure how he could have remembered what he wanted to do if he had not written it down.   There is power in setting goals to paper and there are studies that state that a person is more likely to achieve their goals by writing them down.   Randy then started working on his dreams and just found ways to make it work, even if it wasn’t perfect, he was happy with his results.                 I feel that dreaming is essential because it gives us something to reach for. Landing Page Optimization & Basic SEO (MKT 250 W11 Reflection)

  This week I learned about how to optimize my landing page. The most important thing is to make it user friendly and easy to find the info offered in the ad that led the user to my site. I feel like my landing page is pretty user friendly. I’ve also worked on making the mobile version look good and easy to find what the user is looking for. I’ve noticed that most people who find my ad are on a mobile device.   One of the strategies for optimizing websites was putting testimonials on your website. I think it’s a great idea and I can’t wait till we can add testimonials to our site. We are very close to being finished on the inside of the cabins, and once the furniture gets here, we will be able to rent the cabins out. Relevance & Quality Score (MKT 250 W09 Reflection)

     This week we learned about Quality Score and how it can help you to improve your keywords and website. I learned that this score is the way Google shows more useful ads in higher positions in a search. The better the Quality Score, the higher my ad will be when my keywords are searched. This score can also help me figure out what I need to do to improve user experience with my ad and website because it’s based on expected CTR, ad relevance, and landing page experience. So, if the score is low, I can fix one of these three things to help improve my score. Obviously, I want my ads to appear at the top of the search page, so I’ll be paying close attention to what my score is.      This week I also worked on installing Google Analytics onto my website. I can’t believe how long it took to figure out what I was doing. I finally figured it out and I think I did it correctly.
